New York City's Mayor-Elect, Zohran Mamdani, has confirmed to make his home in the iconic Gracie Mansion, vacating his rent-controlled apartment that became a focal point throughout his election bid.

A Historic Residence

Built in 1799, Gracie Mansion has functioned as the official residence for nearly all New York City mayors since the post-war period.

However, Mamdani, for whom rent control is a key issue, hesitated to declare this decision promptly after his electoral win in November.

"My choice rested on keeping my family safe and the need to focusing my full attention on enacting the agenda for affordability the city's residents voted for," the Mayor-Elect declared on Monday.

Leaving Astoria

Mamdani lived in Astoria, Queens, a community famous for its diverse immigrant populations and culinary diversity.

"To Astoria: many thanks for exemplifying what is great about New York City," he expressed.

"Although my address will change in the neighborhood, Astoria will continue to reside a part of me and my work," he added.

A Contentious Issue

Throughout his election campaign, Mamdani tied his central policy – to freeze the rent – to his own housing situation.

However his rivals, mainly one-time governor Andrew Cuomo, attacked Mamdani for occupying the apartment even though he hails from a well-known family.

A House Not Always Used

Some mayors have decided to stay at Gracie Mansion.

Michael Bloomberg, the billionaire entrepreneur, chose to live in his own townhouse on Manhattan's Upper East Side during his three terms, which concluded in 2012.

Instead, Bloomberg argued it ought to be a venue for civic gatherings, and championed an extensive renovation of the historic mansion.

A Vastly Different Setting

Upon taking up residence at Gracie Mansion near his first day on 1 January, he will be surrounded by surroundings a stark contrast to his humble Astoria home.

Adorned in pale yellow exterior, forest green window covers, and pristine railings, Gracie Mansion is a wedding cake of a house with views of the East River.

Within, the first floor of the historically styled mansion is decorated to reflect the home's original era.

The property, which is said to has five bedrooms, also has fortified protections to protect the mayor and his family.

Haunted History

A number of people have claimed that Gracie Mansion also has ghostly inhabitants.

Chirlane McCray, the partner of former mayor Bill De Blasio, told reporters that doors would sometimes open and closed by themselves, and the floors emitted odd sounds.

Former Mayor Eric Adams was even more convinced. "I don't care the skeptics say," he declared in 2022. "There are ghosts in there, man."

The Value of Rent Stabilization

The apartment he is leaving is under rent control, a policy where the city sets limits on how much building managers can raise the rent each year.

City residents see such units as essential protections as the price of rent exceeds what many can afford.

Records showed Mamdani his rent was $2,300 each month for his apartment.

According to real estate analysts Zillow, the average rent for a studio or one-bedroom in New York City is $3,500 a month.
